Design and features

The long slot is a stainless steel toaster that looks good in any modern kitchen. It’s a “longer than wider” design with levers on both sides that encourage you to pull it over the counter when using it rather than leaving it leaning against the wall. It’s nice to be able to roast four pieces at a time to make sure the whole family is having breakfast at the same time, and longer slots work great with non-standard sized slides, like those made from rye or Ciabatta.

Installation and configuration

There’s really nothing to set up; all I had to do was put it on a meter and plug it in. Fortunately, the IKICH toaster doesn’t try to connect to my wifi and doesn’t need a mobile app to work.

Power

The basic use of the toaster is just what you expect: put in the bread, push down the level on the right side, and wait for toast to pop-up. There are six settings for the heat level, from #1 to # 6, and I started with the dial in the center (#3.5). The first Toast was perfect, a light golden color! It should be noted that the long slit is not evenly toast; the side of the bread inward is always darker than the side outward. Although noticeable, this difference is not significant, and it is certainly not enough to ruin the toast.

On the left side there is another lever that opens the heating grid. Although the slots on this toaster are long, they are not very wide. It does not match, for example, a good thick Bagel from our favorite bagel village of Brueggers. To solve this problem, I can press the level on the left side, and a recovery rack appears. I used it with a Croissant, and it did a very good job of heating it up quickly all the way. This is much better than putting it in the microwave, which tends to dry baked goods and leave them stubborn. This is a convenient feature.

Ikich’s toaster also has a defrosting mode in which you can put slices of frozen bread and run it longer and hotter to defrost and roast. I took a loaf of wheat bread out of the freezer and tried it, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. The toast looked like normal bread on the normal setting. Unfortunately, things got a little weird here. The next morning I went back to the toaster to test the difference between the lowest (#1) and highest (#6) heat setting. However, the lowest setting turned the bread into a light golden color, and the darkest setting burned the bread, forcing me to press the Cancel button and discard the bread before my fire alarm went off. I toasted a few dozen pieces of bread over a two-week period, mostly wheat bread and cinnamon bread, and also used the defrost mode, and I can confirm that something has changed in the grille since using the defrost mode the first time-pain. With each setting, it is much warmer than at the beginning. For me, the perfect toast was at # 3.5, now it’s at #2. the hottest setting (#6) is now unusable, so the bread is blackened and burned. I can’t explain what happened, but it seems that the toaster did not completely break away from the defrost mode. Nothing I tried, including removing the toaster, solved this problem.

The last button is a warm-up button that serves to quickly warm up toast that has been put on too long and cooled.

Additional Features

The long slot has a removable bread compartment that is convenient to remove all the crumbs that inevitably accumulate at the bottom of the grille-pain.

Final thoughts

Ikich’s Long Slot Toaster is popular with me; we certainly enjoyed a lot of toast over the last three weeks. While it still works well for me in the lower settings, I can’t really recommend this toaster. Toasters should not change their operation after using the defrost mode, especially if this change causes the bread to burn.
